Vikings have a man to thank for hitting 75 punts this season
The Minnesota Vikings got a good reminder of the things that can go right on Sunday in Denver, though at least one of those things involved a thunderstorm and a football.
Two days after the team’s second-year punter (second punt of the day) Blair Walsh botched a field goal attempt, another kick came up short for the Minnesota Vikings.
Minnesota punted the ball on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and a Denver punt came back to the two-yard line for a touchdown. If you’re wondering why punting is a little bit different on fourth down, it’s a complicated topic that takes a lot of study to understand.
But in the end, Walsh got the blame for the failed attempt, and the Vikings punted on their next four drives. All four drives ended in a punt, and the Vikings won 30-27 in overtime.
Walsh finished with a season-high 75 punts, 25 in the regular season and 50 in the postseason. Here’s the good news: A lot of those hits came in Week 17. His 25 punts in regular season were just four shy of the franchise record. His 50 in the postseason came on 30 attempts, a 29.4 average, which put him in the lead.
Rookie Taylor Symmank had only 10 punts in the regular season, and he had four in the postseason. That’s the last you’ll hear about Symmank punting in the NFL, at least for the time being. He was terrific in college, though, and he could be a weapon for the Vikings in 2018.The following be359ba680
