František Janák was born in Prague, the son of Josef Janák (1863–1938), a professor of Czech language and literature, and Maria (née Rambarínová). He graduated from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in 1913. During the 1920s and 1930s, he spent most of his time living in Vienna, where he worked in the advertising department of the Wiener Werkzeugbau. He died in Vienna. From 1928 on, he created a large number of engravings for the book illustrated by the Czech artist Otakar Fischer (who created the illustrations of the Czech translations of The Lord of the Rings). These books were published in three series: Images for life, Images for working, Images for reading.
